NASA to crash defunct Compton Observatory into Pacific
NASA will deliberately crash the 17 ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory into a remote Pacific Ocean area to prevent potential harm from a uncontrolled fall. Starting in May, rocket firings will lower its orbit and a final thrust on June 3 will send the craft into a controlled plunge. Debris are expected along a 2547 mile by 16 mile ocean corridor, with the impact lane southeast of Hawaii and near the Galapagos. The observatory, launched in 1991 for a five year mission, has detected hundreds of gamma ray sources and bursts but is deemed too risky to maintain in orbit.

Ex-hostage awarded 341 million by U S judge in Iran suit
Former AP journalist Terry Anderson received 341 million dollars from Iran after a federal judge ruled his nearly seven years in Beirut captivity were savage and cruel. The judgment allocates 24.5 million to Anderson, 10 million to his wife, 6.7 million to their daughter, and 300 million each in punitive damages to be paid by the Iranian Ministry of Information and Security. The decision notes the likelihood of payment is minimal and Anderson hopes the case punishes Iran more than enriches him.
