Coast Guard probes fate of 31 aboard ship Leader L
A 776 foot vessel issued a distress call on Thursday and sank hours later after taking on water through a 45 foot gash in the right hull. Coast Guard officials in Norfolk, Virginia, say the crew began abandoning ship and a lifeboat was spotted after dark. It remains unclear how many of the 31 crew members survived, as rescuers work to determine if all escaped into lifeboats or rafts before the ship sank. Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard C-130 aircraft assisted with the search and rescue operations.
