U.S. role in Latin America spans 159 years
The United States has long acted in Latin America from the Monroe Doctrine to postwar aid programs. Roosevelt's Big Stick era sent Marines to Colombia in 1903 and later to Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. After World War II aid expanded, while covert actions involved Guatemala, the Bay of Pigs, and El Salvador amid a regional civil war. Reagan era worries about Cuban and Soviet support surged, with aerial photos cited and talks of covert actions. Congress debated War Powers and CIA limits as Nicaragua and El Salvador tensions rose.
