Three Mile Island faces cleanup after third emergency this year
Middletown Pa AP reports the Three Mile Island nuclear plant will continue to struggle without thorough cleanup from the 1979 accident. An unusual two hour event stemmed from a leaky valve on Unit 2 cooling, spilling about 200 gallons of mildly radioactive water confined to the plant. Spokesmen said no danger, the event ended after isolation of the leak. Rep Allen Ertel proposed a 225 million cleanup fund, as sirens sounded briefly at the plant during the briefing.

Moon rock lab faced with budget cuts at NASA Space Center
At Johnson Space Center the Apollo moon rocks lab stores 800 pounds of lunar material from six missions in airtight vaults. Since 1969 thousands of samples have been studied and about 14 000 remain. A lean NASA budget could shut the lab in 1983, risking preservation and limited further study. Curator Michael Duke says $300 000 yearly maintains sample integrity, $700 000 allows continued work, while current plans cut at least in half.
