Utah ends firing squad as execution method

Governor Olene Walker signed a bill banning firing squads for executions in Utah, leaving lethal injection as the sole method. The law, effective May 3, exempts four inmates who had already requested firing squad. The change follows media attention from past executions including Gary Gilmore in 1977 and John Albert Taylor in 1996.

Nimrods of WatersmeetGain National Attention

Watersmeet Township School boys basketball team on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, nicknamed the Nimrods since the 1930s, have drawn nationwide attention. Son pleads guilty in elder abuse death case in Kansas

Timothy Harrell died in November 2002 from malnutrition pneumonia and infected bedsores after being cared for at Hamp ton Court apartments by his son Berdella and daughter-in-law Berdella Harrell. The couple faced second degree murder and elder abuse charges. both pled to involuntary manslaughter with a plea agreement reducing charges. Berdella served three months in jail. Timothy faced potential decade in prison if convicted. Sentencing set for April 23.

Families fight stigma of mental illness in Kansas

Lawrence residents share how openness combats stigma as families cope with mental illness. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Kansas Chapter sponsors a free 12 week Family to Family course at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with 15 already enrolled for fall. Instructors Christine Arentson and Robin Williamson, both with personal ties to mental illness, describe phases of discovery, acceptance, and advocacy while noting crises persist and support networks help families feel less alone.
