President Nixon in a TV interview asserts Laos actions guarantee ongoing U.S. troop withdrawals from South Vietnam at least 12,500 monthly. He says Laos reduced danger to remaining American forces and hints at a 1972 reelection bid while opposing a fixed withdrawal deadline.
Lt. William Calley’s attorney charged the jury is “conducting business as usual” amid seven days of deliberations in the My Lai murder case. Judge Reid Kennedy refused to fix hours, noting jurors set their own pace.
Brian Faulkner, a moderate Unionist, is sworn in as Northern Ireland prime minister after defeating William Craig 26 to 4 in a party caucus. Craig threatens to form a rival bloc as IRA violence continues and the Provisional wing claims responsibility for leadership upheavals. At least 20 deaths this year mark the ongoing campaign.

Judge Floyd H Coffman ruled he will be treated as a juvenile. The incident involved three minors. David Schaulis 17 pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced. William Barker 18 awaits district court action. The Boys Industrial School at Topeka plans to take Lana, despite BIS typically not admitting ages 16 or older.
In Pasadena three scientists at JPL say sterilized fine soil and ground glass exposed to ultraviolet light produced organic compounds such as acetaldehyde formaldehyde and glycolic acid. They simulated Mars conditions with carbon dioxide monoxide and water vapor and concluded sunlight could create life building blocks near the surface.
