Eels Use Radar Like System to Find Way in Murky Water
New York exhibit by C W Coates, curator of the New York Aquarium and a member of the New York Zological Society, explains electric eels from tropical South America employ high frequency pulses to locate objects. Despite poor eyesight, the eels can detect electrical discharges and vents, a radar type mechanism, though the exact sensory pores and response remain under study. They can reach four to seven feet, generate up to 690 volts, and may use a nonvisual sense to navigate and hunt in dark swampy waters.
