Western Powers Act Against Reds in Berlin Currency Split
Western powers in Berlin issued an order outlawing the Soviet East mark in the American British and French sectors effectively creating a split economy with West Berlin using the went mark and East Berlin using the Soviet mark. The move escalates currency tensions amid the Berlin blockade and may invite retaliation as discussions on relief and aid continue. United States Truman seeks congressional authority for aid to Western Europe and a NATO style treaty moves toward Senate approval with major powers pledged to mutual defense. Russia's stance labels the pact aggressive while Moscow papers publish dispatches abroad.

Forced medical plan impractical, Kansas dean says
Dr. Franklin Murphy of the University of Kansas Medical Center told the Lawrence Rotary Club that a compulsory federal health insurance plan would cripple U S medical facilities amid doctor and nurse shortages. He urged voluntary, state funded grants to expand training and facilities, arguing such a plan undermines individual responsibility and could push the United States toward a welfare state. He noted rural issues and said many economists misjudge the doctor mother patient bond and local solutions on the state level.
