The University of Kansas plans its annual Honors Convocation on Friday April 12 at 10 oclock. Dr Wallace B Fleming president of Baker University Baldwin will deliver the address. Outstanding students will be recognized and the Honor Man for 1984 named. The Honor Man is the prior graduating class’s standout whose impact on campus is deemed most beneficial. Washington reports the Senate rejected a proposal to cut a relief appropriation of 4 380 400 000 to 31 800 000 900. The vote stood 66 to 21 against Senator Byrd of Virginia. Byrd urged removing 3 000 000 009 from the 4 000 000 000 fund, accusing public works funds of being diverted to routine departmental expenses.
Dr. George E. Johnson aged 45, zoology professor at Kansas State College and secretary of the Kansas Academy of Science, died after a prolonged illness in a Manhattan hospital following surgery last November. He continued to meet with students and direct research they conducted for him until his death.

Scientists from across Kansas converge at the University of Kansas March 28 to 30 for the 67th annual meeting of the Kansas Entomological Society and the Kansas Academy of Science. Wichita, March 19 AP Justin Miller, special assistant United States attorney general, urged federal local state and federal law enforcement to unite for improved crime enforcement. Attendees included Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Colorado officers. He warned communities to recognize crime as a shared problem and urged judges prosecutors and peace officers to work together to solve it. The speaker emphasized the scope of crime and the need for broader collaboration across agencies.
Sedalia Missouri bank robbers seized Assistant Cashier James Norlin and robbed the Sedalia Bank & Trust of about 16000 at opening. Norlin, cashier William Courtney, teller Fred Brink, bookkeeper E A Sterlow, stenographer Rowena Turner, and clerk William Hurley were held overnight and tied in the Poundstone home vault before authorities were warned. The robbers fled with the money. route unknown. President Roosevelt modified veterans economy rules with increases in allowances to widows and children.
The board of education seeks rezoning of three Quincy school lots for business use to enable sale. Planning commission has approved the petition, pending final action by the city council. Most of the land is residential zoning, with a portion of lot 21 already zoned for business.
Cyrus Jones of Lawrence high school is sidelined from the state tournament in Topeka due to mumps. Paul Moon, recently rejoined after illness, will replace him. Jones played in the regional semifinal and final at Leavenworth. Moon has seen ample court time this season.
State game wardens met with Lake View club officers about relocating fish from the drying lake. They found many fish died in the winter freeze as water stayed shallow. With the lake under two feet deep, moving stock to the state lake at Tonganoxie is under consideration to save the population before warm weather endangers more fish.
London reports a body found in the Grand Union canal near Brentford with head and legs hacked off, arms attached and a severed hand. The gruesome torso may link to prior severed legs found on a Waterloo Line train, reviving last summer’s Brighton trunk murder mysteries and raising police urgency.
A dust storm described as worse than last Saturday swept Woodward Morgan and nearby northwest Oklahoma towns early today. Visibility dropped to a half block in Woodward at 8 a.m. The wind came from the north, not unusually strong, and the storm appeared to travel south and east.
Kansas farmers signed corn hog contracts for 1934 have received 4 414 000 in adjustment payments in the last 10 weeks. Total payments in the state reach 11 708 278 with more checks to be distributed after April 1. About 55 286 farmers already signed for 1935 contracts, 15 000 fewer than expected. Some signatories delayed by pending 1934 payments, which will arrive after April 3 due to the AAA workload.

Welch dismissed the effort, noting Carlisle closed in 1917 and urging support for western schools like Haskell.
Independence Kansas March 19 AP E R Stevens president of the National Federation of High School Athletic Associations named delegates to the spring national rules committee meetings in track basketball and wrestling. Appointments include E A Thomas Topeka track and B J Wiggins Columbus Ohio wrestling with others to be named later. The basketball group lists H V Porter Chicago Lloyd Rowe Cleveland and H A Swafield Fairfield Conn. A swimming delegate and another basketball representative will be named.
