Amelia Earhart reached Honolulu at 10 29 a m central standard time marking 15 hours 6 2 minutes for the 2 400 mile Oakland to Honolulu leg in her flying laboratory. The record westbound crossing averaged 150 miles an hour and set the stage for the worldwide flight.
Winfield Kansas on March 18 2000 high school musicians from Kansas and Oklahoma compete in the annual contest sponsored by Southwestern College. Winfield leads with 480 entrants as bands choruses woodwind and brass solos and ensembles vie for top ratings and national contest eligibility in May at Lawrence. Judges include Edgar director Ames Iowa State College Fred Oste Karl Euer steiner Irene Peabody and Otto Fischer.
In Topeka on March 18 1947 the Senate approved and sent to the House the long debated claim of Arkansas City attorney D Arthur Walker for 8500 dollars to recover 450000 of Tom Boyd bonds tied to a million dollar bogus bond scheme. Walker’s total claim of 22600 drew two hours of debate with calls to trim it to 35000. The House cleared its calendar on third reading as it prepared to debate Ratner aid measures. Walker had previously settled at 8500 after saying 2600 was paid by former Attorney General Roland Boynton and about 2000 was for personal expenses. The contingent fund was exhausted and Boynton unable to pay the rest. Opposition centered on paying more than what a normal assistant attorney general would earn for 22 months. The House judged eighteen bills on third reading, passing five Senate measures and several House bills.
Topeka March 18 Ralph T ONeil chairman of the regents committee said Lonborg may be the KU athletic director but the committee has not decided. Lonborg sent a letter and the panel will meet to discuss terms and possible terms with Northwestern official Tug Wilson before a final decision.
Washington reports Dean Thomas F. Konop of Notre Dame urged the Roosevelt court bill before the senate judiciary committee claiming the court must be kept within constitutional limits. Earlier Dean Leon Green of Northwestern testified that the court should be subject to political control for a fair court. Senate passes welfare bill to conference. Lindberghs land at Delhi during aerial tour of India.
New York Mar 18 The race between wages and living costs shapes the American standard of living. Payroll gains since the lows exceed increases in prices for staples, but rising costs may erode this. The January payroll index rose about 23 percent from a year earlier while living costs advanced roughly 4 percent. Compared to 1929 peaks, envelopes still lag costs, with January living costs about 14 percent under the 1929 peak and payrolls near 22 percent below the high eight years ago.
London March 18 The King's Proctor applied for directions from the president of the divorce court Sir Boyd Merriman in a move seen as clearing the way for Mrs Wallis Simpson and Ernest Aldrich Simpson to obtain the final decree. The undefended case was listed for 10:30 am with speculation that no party sought to accelerate the process. Edward VIII reportedly plans to wed Simpson in April, with discussions possible in Monts France.
The Douglas county Farmers Union will hold its first quarterly meeting of the year at the farmers' union hall in Baldwin on Saturday. It is an all day event with a basket dinner at noon. Ross Palinske, state Farmers Union board member, will be principal speaker. The Baker University male quartet will provide part of the entertainment. New officers for the year will be installed and other business matters addressed.
Frank R. Strong son of Mrs Frank Strong of Lawrence and the late Dr Frank Strong will become assistant professor of law at Ohio State university starting September 1 He currently teaches as an assistant professor of law at the University of Town Lawrence native holds an A B and an LLB from Yale University He will receive a higher salary in the Ohio post as announced today. The note adds that he studied in Lawrence and has Yale credentials.
The stock index shows an average of 60 stocks at 72.1 with a note yesterday at 74. Hanna promotes Frigidaire appliances in an advertisement. Phone 303-Adv.
The tenth annual Kansas Water and Sewage Works Association meeting and welding conference opened at the University of Kansas with 100 out of town men in attendance. Frank E. Willey of Lawrence presided and sessions run through Saturday morning. The program featured lectures on plumbing defects, swimming pools, and water treatment, plus a welding track with demonstrations in oxy acetylene welding tonight led by G F Dickins.
Massachusetts committee votes 9 to 2 against ratification of the federal child labor amendment. Connecticut House rejects the amendment for the third time since 1925, defeated 74 to 83 after a lengthy debate.
The House approved a two year limit on a provision in McReynolds neutrality bill to require cash and carry for arms shipments to fighting nations. By voice vote, Representative Shanley’s amendment made cash and carry temporary and drew Republican support, easing opposition to the controversial section. An earlier amendment to ban exports of arms and ammunition in peacetime as well as wartime was rejected 101 to 74.
Douglas county announces a county spelling contest for April 3 in the Lawrence Memorial High School study hall. County Superintendent Harold Fisher says three classes will determine county winners to advance to the state contest in Topeka on September 14, with participation invited from all district schools. Classes A B C defined by grade level and a possible Class D later. last year’s Class D winner J. M. Palmer may not compete and could direct the county event.
An exhibit of oil paintings water colors and ink drawings by Eugene McFarland a Liberty Memorial high school graduate and KU alum is on display at Liberty Memorial high school through the month. Works include a self portrait and a portrait of his wife with pieces created in Europe and in Kansas Missouri and along the Mississippi River. Lawrence residents lending pictures include Rev. Seth Slaughter E R Wood J W Murray H H Lane and W C Simons.
Los Angeles on March 18 Helen Wills Love a 31 year old convicted slayer awoke from a six day horror coma and spoke to doctors in the county jail hospital. Dr Samuel Marcus said she was brought back to consciousness in the 158th hour and the doctors ordered rest with no discussion of the experience.
The Massachusetts House approved by 120 to 112 a repeal of the teachers oath law requiring teachers to swear allegiance to state and national constitutions. Heated debate continued until the vote as the measure moved toward the Senate. Local Men Get Permit: The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized Cecil Wilber Dover and Wesley Flory of Lawrence Kansas to operate as a truck common carrier within 15 miles of Lawrence to Kansas City Missouri.
Lincoln park development proceeds with plans for a spring summer opening. A baseball field will be included on the former hospital site. The city will offer use to colored groups, though not exclusively, while Cordrey grounds will not host summer play. A meeting of about 50 colored leaders debated the proposal, with mixed reactions. Colored youths baseball organizations seek Lincoln park access for larger use.
Topeka reports federal meteorologist S. D. Flora forecasting unsettled weather for tonight and Friday with scattered showers probable. Mild today and tomorrow with clouds moving in and light freezes expected in north central and northwest Kansas. Temperatures yesterday ranged 50 to 60 degrees, with tomorrow's near 60 across the state.

Lou Gehrig, star first baseman for the New York Yankees, agreed to a one year contract for 36 000 dollars at the club camp in St. Petersburg Florida. He will depart New York for St. Petersburg immediately. The 36 000 dollar figure is 4 000 dollars below his request and 5 000 dollars above the club’s initial offer.
