Lawmaker suspends aid to Ecuador over prison case
Rep. Sonny Callahan ordered a nearly 20 million dollar suspension of U S assistance to Ecuador in protest of what he calls unjust treatment of Florida man James Williams serving an eight year term on a 1998 money laundering conviction. Williams waited over two years for trial and more than a year for an appeal to Ecuadorian Supreme Court. Ecuadorian officials did not comment. State Department has raised Williams case with Ecuadorian authorities. The aid suspension targets programs aiding the poor, including family planning and health care. Williams was indicted in Tampa on drug and money laundering links to Jose Castrillon, with his Florida case ongoing.
