Rumors of an Allied ultimatum in Korea circulate as stalemates persist along a tense front. Officials doubt the move would help, noting half a million troops face deep Chinese and North Korean defenses while air superiority remains fragile and casualties mount.
A Friday explosion at a Merriam battery shop in Johnson County Kansas demolished the interior. Owner Milton M Downing and a 19 year old worker escaped serious injury. Downing said a spark from an electric Gatling arc ignited an oil burner triggering the blast. Fire spread damage. Downing and John Mooney were hurled outside. Downing suffered minor facial burns. A prized hired dog perished. the owner estimated damage at $5000.
In Korea the front quieted after heavy shelling in weeks as storms from Manchuria blanked air operations. Communist shore batteries fired twice at U S ships off Wonsan, but the navy reported no damage to the cruisers Manchester and Fo.
Six of seven crew members died when an air force C-47 cargo plane based at Moody Air Force Base Valdosta Georgia crashed into a pine thicket near Bay Minette Alabama on Thursday. One lieutenant parachuted free but was burned. The aircraft was en route from Kelly Air Force Base Texas to Bainbridge Georgia.
Mrs. Joe B. Kuska of Colby named Kansas Mother of the Year for 1952 after managing a home and attending college with three sons. The 63-year-old winner will represent Kansas for American Mother of the Year and is active in many clubs, radio programs, and antique collecting. Her sons, all University of Nebraska graduates, work in California as an aerospace engineer, flight test engineer, and architect.
Senator Connally of Texas angrily argues against continued large scale foreign aid, challenging Harriman over Truman's 7.9 billion plan. Harriman defends the program, noting 212 billion in defense support and significant aid to Britain and France amid calls to cut spending while stressing global stakes and the need to bolster allies.
J D Hall a 24 year old produce dealer from Manhattan gulped 32 glasses of orange juice to win the first International Orange Drinking Contest in Orlando Florida. He downed a gallon and a half of juice in the competition sponsored by the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce. Hall said the first 20 glasses went down easy but the rest were a bit sickening. His prize was 25 silver dollars.
About 1,600 student tickets for the NCAA Regional in Kansas City on March 21 and 22 sold out in two hours after 8 15 this morning at the Kansas University Athletic Office. Kansas will face Texas Christian University opening night in Robinson Gymnasium. Officials say many students queued since 2 am and the sale caused heavy crowding and stairway jams throughout the building.
The Lawrence Junior Chamber of Commerce articles of incorporation were approved and filed in Topeka. Incorporators John Starkey Robe rt B Docking and Fred J Stubeck Jr are named officers. The organization aims to shield its officers from personal liability. The move was timed with game time.
Jerry Armstrong, senior chairman, announced seven freshmen selected for the 27th annual Kans Relaya committee at the University of Kansas. The group, working with medt director Bill Easton, assists in arranging the April 18 and 19 track and field spectacle. Members named include Harlan Parkinson, Scott i Fred, Jerry Dawson, Tapeki Rice, Abilene Mo., Paul Barko, Sas Ci Mo., Jay Warner, and Darrell Fanestil.
Washington announces 25 reserve corps armories in 24 cities including Topeka. The project costs nine million dollars and will add to three completed or under construction. No details given on construction start or per armory cost.
A major fire tore through downtown Anaconda Montana on Friday, fueled by exploding gasoline tanks. The flames gutted the Intermountain Bus Company headquarters and threatened nearby businesses. No injuries were reported.

An internal revenue agent from New York City refused to answer whether he took a bribe or if his net worth statement was accurate before a House subcommittee. Charles Vesee, 41, resigned as zone deputy collector for the Third New York District on February 12. The panel also heard from Robert W. A German displaced family of seven, the Ucksches, will arrive in Lawrence around March 22 under sponsorship by the Trinity Lutheran Church Young Married Couples Class. Ed gar Ucksche, 42, Elsa, 36, and their four sons and a daughter will seek housing and employment, with a committee led by Delbert Gerstenberger choosing placements. The family, part of the displaced persons program, has lived in camps since deportation to Germany, with country of origin still unclear.
Ed wards of Winfield, 60 feet above ground on a derrick, was trapped for about 20 minutes when a gas well blew during testing at 1,450 feet. He slid down a rope to safety and was hospitalized for bruises and nausea as gas continued to spurt 20 feet three hours later. The Baird No. 1 well sits in Bryant Field four miles west and a quarter mile south of Arkansas City.
Lawrence Elks Lodge No 595 officers will travel to Kansas City to conduct initiation services for Kansas City candidates. They recently visited Leavenworth and Michison and will proceed to Topeka and Ottawa. The group will compete in a state contest on initiation ceremonies. The Red Cross fund reached $10,096.06 by noon with $7,000 remaining to meet the county quota. Douglas County reports $3,651 in, over $4,000 residential, and rural workers begin canvassing as the end date was extended to March 25 due to storms. New gifts over $25 include Carter's Stationery, Rumsey Funeral Home, Gibbs Clothing Co., Shaw Lumber Co., and others.
