Health Care Access Celebrates 15 Years

Health Care Access marks its 15th anniversary with an open house at 1920 Moodie Road. About 40 visitors toured the clinic as events coordinator Gail Vick noted some attendees may need the services in the future. Diane Whitten, president of the board, served cake to guest Beth Reiber.

Nature Center Adds Eagles to Prey Exhibit

Prairie Park Nature Center welcomes two injured birds, Kansa a 3 year bald eagle and Lakhota a 10 year golden eagle, to its birds of prey exhibit after power line collisions. An eagle exhibit dedication is set for 4 p.m. Thursday at 2730 Harper Street.

River City Weekly hosts Academy Awards preview show

River City Weekly presents its annual Academy Awards preview tonight with host Greg Hurd. Joined by KU theater professor John Tibbetts and critics Shawn Edwards Lucy Lockerby and Jon Niccum, the program covers best actor actress director film and worst film of the year. It airs on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 at 6 30 p m with encores weeknights 7 30 and Saturdays 9 am.

Dennis Moore Returns from Havana Trip

Rep. Dennis Moore of Kansas returned from a four day congressional delegation trip to Havana. He met with Cuban President Fidel Castro for three hours to discuss trade issues travel restrictions and joint medical research. Moore said relaxed trade rules would aid Kansas farmers and businesses.

Kansas advocacy agency suspends services amid audit

Kansas Advocacy and Protective Services halted services after putting staff on administrative leave and changing doors. Board president Anna Silva-Keith said an audit of the program and finances followed federal concerns and Gov. Sebelius’s office inquiries. State officials vow to monitor developments.

Silent students mark drunk driving toll at Lawrence High

Lawrence High School students in black T-shirts staged the Every 17 Minutes event to dramatize drunken driving deaths, representing one victim per day and urging reflection as spring break and graduation approach. The FYI Club distributed posters about Jacqueline Saburido and emphasized a personal, real-life perspective over videos. about 17 000 deaths occur yearly now.

Lawrenc​e candidates back plan to buy Farmland site

Six Lawrence City Commission candidates support a plan for city and county to purchase the defunct Farmland Industries fertilizer plant near Lawrence. They would explore industrial space and green space use with a Vision Team to map growth over 20 to 100 years while a price and cleanup cost are considered. Current commissioners plan a morning meeting behind closed doors to discuss the 467-acre site east of the city.

Suspects in Riverfront Park beating captured in Kansas

Two men wanted for questioning in the beating of Mayetta resident Josh Greemore were captured Tuesday morning in southeast Kansas after an overnight pursuit. Police said the suspects, last seen fleeing in a stolen 1991 blue Geo Storm, will face possible charges including attempted burglary and aggravated battery.
