Gordon Parks remembered for film work and civil rights impact
Gordon Parks, pioneer photographer and filmmaker, dies at 93. His 1969 The Learning Tree based on 1963 autobiography helped shape Black cinema, earning a place in the National Film Registry in 1989. Parks also directed Shaft and its sequel, and his son Gordon Parks Jr. directed Super Fly before dying in a plane crash. He faced racism and poverty while building a career at Life, Vogue, and later as an author and composer.
