Marines Land in Da Nang for Defense of Air Base
About 3,500 Marines from the 3rd Marine Division arrived in Da Nang South Viet Nam by sea and air to bolster the air base defense against Viet Cong attacks. One battalion ashore aboard ships. another landed on C130 transports from Okinawa. Casualties included two, one fatal, and a captain who broke a leg. a helicopter squadron was delayed by surf. Brig. Gen. Frederick Karch stated defensive duties with patrolling, while Vietnamese and U.S. advisers observed the operation. Pretty girls welcomed Karch and his men as they stepped ashore.
