Grand Canyon formed much earlier than thought study says
A University of New Mexico team reports in Science that the western Grand Canyon began forming about 17 million years ago, older than the commonly cited six million years. Using uranium lead dating on cave formations, they trace water table changes and slow erosion shaping the canyon, suggesting separate formation times for canyon segments.
