Saigon reports heavy Communist mortar barrages on Camp Carroll eight and a half miles south of the DMZ with about 500 shells in three attacks. Six Marines were killed and 15 wounded. 14 Americans died or were wounded and 61 communists killed in recent ground fighting as U S forces reported strong action across the area.

Youth acquitted as sniper held in dual slaying
In Rockford Illinois a 17 year old youth formerly acquitted of wounding a teen was jailed on murder charges in the execution style killings of two 14 year old cousins Ronald Johnson and Wayne Mullendere. Police found a .22 rifle with a telescopic sight and homemade silencer at his home and questioned dozens of associates. The timing and ages mark a racially charged case as the victims were white and the suspect a Black youth. Williams is held in jail awaiting a preliminary hearing as investigators pursue possible accomplices.
