Kilts and cannonballs marked a Sunday fundraiser for local charities as the St Patrick's Day Parade Committee of Lawrence hosted an Irish road bowling event at Clinton Lake State Park. Organizer Charlie Upton noted it as the first such event west of the Mississippi with a $30 entry including beer food and shuttle by 23rd Street Brewery. The sport, dating to 1600s Ireland, involves rolling a 13⁄4 pound metal bowl along a closed road using an underhand motion.

Meth epidemic takes toll on users in southeast Kansas
By the time a meth addict reaches Stacey Hauck, there’s little left. Hauck, clinical director of addiction services at the Community Mental Health Center of Crawford County, describes “hitting bottom” and the need to lose everything to begin recovery. She oversees a 24‑bed inpatient unit in Girard, the region’s only such facility, which is always full with a four‑week waiting list, reflecting a decades‑long rise in meth production from large labs to easy “one‑pot” manufacture now common in the area.

Pen pals bridge 900 miles across 90 years
At 98, Wichita man Robert Ford begins a pen pal project with four Summerville and Atlanta first-grade classes. Laura Gamble, a Summerville teacher, organized the exchange after Lynn Ford requested Christmas cards. The kids send 110 cards, then Ford shares memories of growing up, party lines, the Maple Theatre in Wichita, harvest time, and snipe hunts. The stories fill three-ring binders for reading, while Ford’s wall of his College Hill home grows with Valentine cards.
