Douglas County taps new directions as administrator retires

City moves to aid KU alcohol ban enforcement

Lawrence city commissioners proposed changes to ban open containers of cereal malt beverage and liquor in public KU areas to support university policy. KU officials say the amendments would let KU police enforce the city rules, improving safety after alcohol related injuries and outside activities around the campus.

Strata pinpointed in dropout studies

Two local studies at Lawrence High School show a disproportionate share of dropouts are Native American, Hispanic, or from low income backgrounds. Nancy Albrecht and Sandra Chapman reported that 41 dropouts in fall 1990 included 12.2 percent Hispanics and 7.3 percent Native Americans, with whites and blacks underrepresented among dropouts compared with the student body.

House panel OKs KU budget increase

A Kansas House Appropriations Committee vote endorsed a bill boosting KU funding by about 3 percent and funds Hoch Auditorium reconstruction planning. The bill also includes a 2 percent raise for student workers and staff and a 4 percent operating budget rise across six state universities, with KU receiving about 2.9 percent more. The plan moves to the House after defeating a $23 million tuition hike proposal, and awaits Senate action.

Lawrence mother and boyfriend face charges in toddler death

Lawrence police testified that 23 month old Eric Brewer died of a ruptured liver from a blunt blow. His mother Wendy Brewer, 25, faces involuntary manslaughter charges while Donald Bruce Jr., 29, is charged with first degree murder and child abuse. Autopsy confirmed internal bleeding. Preliminary hearing continued in Douglas County.
