Study finds antibacterial soaps offer little added protection
Researchers at Columbia University gave antibacterial cleaning products to 120 New York City families and followed them for almost a year. The study found similar rates of runny noses sore throats and fevers compared with a group using regular soaps, and published in Annals of Internal Medicine. The lead author Elaine Larson noted the products target bacteria not viruses and do not reduce common viral infections. The study involved 1,178 Manhattan residents.
