KU on the Lawrence campus reports a spring headcount of 17 045 with gains in seniors fifth year students and the intensive English center offsetting undergraduate losses. The total new student count is 765 down from 777 last spring, with a shift to 60 percent men among new entrants.
U N pledge: Agronomist Claude Fly, 64, freed by Tupamaros after a heart attack, is reported in apparently satisfactory condition in Montevideo. He and heart specialist Dr. Jorge Dighiero were found blindfolded in an abandoned truck outside a hospital. Fly had been captive nearly seven months and is expected to stay in hospital about a month for heart attack care.
DeSoto Unified School District 232 approves contracts for 93 teachers eight administrators and one psychologist for next year. Remaining staff mostly retire. Principal Harry Mahon of DeSoto Elementary to retire. Susan Ellis resigns to move to St Louis. Dysart pregnancy dismissal case discussed but not yet in court. Starting salary rises to 6350. top pay reaches 11200. Graduation unit requirements rise to 19 for 1973 and 20 for 1974 with added social studies and physical education units. Calendar sets Aug 20 23 start and May 26 1972 close with half days. Juvenile vandalism sentences include work in district. Federal program funding reviewed with Title I 35000 and other grants. a four mill capital outlay levy is sought by resolution without election.
The Kansas House passed a statewide voter registration bill by 77 to 43 and sent it to the Senate. The measure limits registration to the largest four counties and other first and second class cities, with rural counties opposing. Support grew this year amid questions about lowering the voting age to 18 and concerns about student voting at school and by absentee ballot.
Representatives from the ROTC met KU Chancellor Laurence Chalmers to discuss arrangements for the annual ROTC Review on Mt. Ongoing discussions referenced by Col. Rayburn Lancaster indicate no decision yet. Chancellor Chalmers noted he will consider ROTC recommendations and may rule before classes resume after spring vacation on March 15.
Four Wichita State University student groups denounced Vern Miller's raid on Lawrence and KU campus in a telegram signed by the Committee for Student Rights Urban Student Coalition Fairmount United Community Kids and the Legal Self Defense Fund. The message accuses Miller of using political ambition and tactics to pursue his raid.
Two more suspects were rounded up near 12th and Oread as state agents executed John Doe warrants tied to a December drug sting. A 17 year old juvenile remains in Lawrence Municipal Jail facing possible illegal possession and sale charges. Montie Allen Blaine, 19, of 1309 Ohio, posted 1500 bond and is jailed in Douglas County on illegal possession and sale of amphetamines.
An attendant at Clark Service Station in Lawrence reported an armed robbery at 4:45 a.m. and later was arrested at 9:30 a.m. on charges of filing a false police report and petty larceny. Mark Burchett, 20, of 1113 Conn., posted 1200 bond for a March 10 trial. Police say the station loss was 48.89.
Kansas University announces four days of class remain before spring break. The break begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with classes resuming March 15. The semester ends with finals from May 5 to May 14 and commencement set for May 16 to 17.

McDonald links ozone loss to 500 SST flights and a possible rise in skin cancer, while noting UFO correlation with the 1965 New York blackout.

The U S Public Health Service awarded eight grants totaling 183 751 dollars to Kansas University Medical Center faculty. Recipients include Dr Jacob K Frenkel for cellular and humoral immunity studies, Dr William E Larsen for cancer chemotherapy, Dr Donald J Svoboda for cellular responses to carcinogenic injury, Dr Alan M Thompson for brain electrolyte transport, Dr Francis E Cuppage for nephron regeneration, Dr Leonard F Peltier on fat embolism, Dr Charles M Tarr for voltage clamp of cardiac muscle, and Dr Alvar A Werder for oncogenic viruses in axenic mice.

Gov. Robert Docking criticized a legislative committee for killing a bill that would have given officials tools to curb illegal drug sale and use at rock festivals. The House committee defeated the measure 9 to 8, blocking full debate on its merits.

The plan includes a grant for increased class size, a new building, and expanded curriculum at the medical center, plus a 40 million dollar facilities expansion. The University of California Seismographic Station recorded a strong earthquake at 5:50 a.m. CST about 1,600 miles southeast of Berkeley, possibly off the Baja California coast. The spokesman estimated magnitude between 5.5 and 5.75 on the Richter scale.
