Neighborhood group blocks shelter plan with park proposal
The Brook Creek Neighborhood Association pressed the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission to buy the 15th Street and Haskell Avenue site for a park to thwart Salvation Army homeless shelter plans. Residents cited flooding concerns and urged a long term zoning fix. The panel did not comment, with applications due March 12. The commission also approved a Horizon 2020 amendment to shield Lawrence Memorial Hospital from private competition, a change city and county officials must approve. Columbia HCA had previously sought a local hospital site in the mid-1990s.
