Gas tax rise and wide Kansas law changes take effect

Kansas begins new laws at midnight including a penny gasoline tax hike from seven to eight cents per gallon and a diesel tax increase to ten cents. Vehicle registration and park fees rise next year while a tax credit for new jobs and headgear relief for riders are also enacted. Major reforms cover education funding, labor, malpractice limits, mental health rights, firearms penalties, and court unification.

Commission lowers dog fines and weighs kennel rule

City commissioners approved a final dog-control ordinance reducing the minimum fine from 25 to 10 dollars, with the current minimum at 5 dollars. They discussed kennel definitions, approved housing program reports, and advanced several infrastructure and planning actions including sewer bids and roadway paving.

Hijackers Release 47 Hostages At Entebbe

Palestinian hijackers holding 250 plus hostages at Entebbe Airport Uganda released 47 elderly women sick persons and children. Two Americans Carol Taylor 33 and her son Eric 6 were freed and handed to French ambassador. The Israeli cabinet planned an emergency session to decide on freeing 40 prisoners to ransom the rest.

County to open investment bids for 4 million dollars

Douglas County will open bids Thursday for investing 4 million dollars of taxpayer money in short term instruments. The plan, approved by the county commission, aims to yield about 7 thousand dollars by mid July through repurchase agreements and short term deposits in local banks.

McLouth School Board Approves Auditorium Remodel

The McLouth school board approved final changes to the high school auditorium damaged by fire in December 1974. Plans convert the balcony into a single level and two classrooms for journalism and newspaper production. contractor Arnold Harwood, also a board member, awarded the project at a cost not to exceed $2,200. Other actions included purchases, guidance counselor policy review, and plans for the elementary addition.

Lawrence Readies Bicentennial Fourth Fest in July Weekend

Lawrence prepares a full July 4 schedule leading to a Memorial Stadium fireworks finale. The festival includes a Prairie Chautauqua at South Park with music, dances and crafts, plus a dense lineup of performances and parades on Friday through Monday in celebration of 200 years of independence.

Farm product prices rise in June while retail costs unclear

Prices farmers received for soybeans corn and hogs rose in June lifting the farm price index to 195 percent of the 1967 base. Cattle apples and hay fell, while USDA warned retail food costs may rise 2 to 5 percent this year despite bumper rain crops.
