The Lawrence district board hired John Ames as director of vocational and continuing education and John F Kapfer as director of maintenance and operations to fill vacancies from retirements. Ames replaces Max Stalcup effective July 1 at an annual salary of 20000. Ames resides at 224 Concord and has 25 years of experience.

House approves $5.3 billion transportation bill despite veto threats

The House passed a $5.3 billion transportation appropriations measure lifting the highway trust fund ceiling. The final vote was 376 to 21 with an amendment to lift spending approved 251 to 146. Officials say removing the cap could add $1 to $5 billion in potential funds.
