Snakes in Court: Man Charged in Death Plot With Rattlers
In Los Angeles a barber named Robert S. James faces murder charges over alleged use of two rattlesnakes to kill his wife Mary James for a $20,000 life insurance payout. Testimony described James binding Mary to a table and submerging her leg in a snake-filled box before her fatal drowning. A reptile pit proprietor identified the snakes as the ones sold to James via Charles Hope, a former sailor. Hope testified he bought them for James and saw him with Mary during the incident. A niece of the accused cried out during the proceeding as the snakes were brought to court. The trial opened with witnesses to identify the venom and the snakes.
