Mission South Walker Sets National Age Group Record
Steve Nelson of Shawnee Mission South set a national age group record in the 7 10 5 mile walk at the Missouri Valley AAU Junior Olympics at Haskell Stadium. The 16 year old, leading early, finished about 200 yards ahead of Paul Ide of La Crosse in hot 80s conditions, then nearly collapsed. He noted the tough final 220 yards and said he feared a slower time before crossing the line. The race ended AAU competition for Nelson for the season, drawing comment from coach Verlyn Schmidt that walking offers more opportunities for some students than running.
