Huge Tax Bill Extends Four Billion Federal Taxes

The Senate sent to President Eisenhower a bill extending four billion dollars of federal taxes for another year and raising the debt ceiling. It extends the 52 percent corporate income tax and various excises through June 30, 1961, with travel and telephone levies dating to World War I. The House passed the compromise act Monday.

Federal grand jury charges Melvin David Rees Jr. with kidnapping and murdering Virginia mother Carroll V. Eisenhower Likely To Veto Federal Pay Raise Bill

In the Courts County Court Donald Crank of Paris Illinois fined 150 for driving while license suspended and open bottle. Legion Horse Show This Weekend Sets Kansas Record

The 16th annual Lawrence American Legion Horse Show starts this weekend at the 4 H Fairgrounds. With 218 horses entered in 416 events across 48 classes from harness to ponies, officials prepare barns and arenas for a record turnout in Kansas. Entries close Friday at 5 p.m. and show nights run Friday through Sunday at 7 p.m.

Driver Unhurt After Wreck on Kansas Turnpike Near Lawrence

Davido E Crowley 22 of New Franklin Missouri escaped injury in a one car accident on the Kansas Turnpike about 144 miles east of East Lawrence interchange during a rain storm at 2 a.m. Damages totaled 150 for the pickup and 50 for turnpike property. In a separate two car crash about 10 miles west of West Lawrence interchange Frances Leola Gill and William H Wiseman were treated for injuries. Dr Harry Craig and his son were treated and released.

Bank Sells Site on Massachusetts Street

Douglas County State Bank officials announced the sale of a 50 foot business location at 846 Mass St to Duane Kraft who will continue using the space as a furniture store. Kraft plans improvements while the bank moves its new facility to the West Ninth Street area after purchasing the old Manual Junior High School building and adjacent property. The Massachusetts Street sale was handled by the Barlow Agency.

Driver Escapes Injury After Lone Star Road Crash

About 2:30 am a one car collision 314 miles southwest of Lawrence on Lone Star road caused estimated $200 damage. Everett C. Barnes 20 of Route 5 was not injured per Undersheriff Ben Bowen. His car failed to slow for a stop sign then veered into a ditch.
