Drug dogs at Lawrence High monitor at risk students
Since January 1993 Lawrence High School uses drug sniffing dogs to search lockers and cars. Three-dog teams from Springfield, Missouri, cost $400 on two occasions this school year while a Douglas County Sheriff’s Department dog was used free of charge on other occasions. Administrators say the goal is to raise concern and assist students, not punish, with paraphernalia confiscated and at risk students monitored through daily teacher checks. Senior-to-be Brandon Urban says the program may deter drug use but does not solve the problem.
