Telegraph weather bulletin from Wasmieres on January 23 reports gentle rain in the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys with southerly to westerly winds. Conditions described as partly cloudy with steady or slight rising temperatures and a small rise in barometric pressure.
The Forty Seventh Congress session discusses adding Franklin Alaska as a state, internal revenue reforms, and taxation impacts. Senators report favorably on a territorial admission bill, while a House committee debates tobacco regulation, tax relief aims, and debt obligations. A navy retirement recommendation is referred as the House adjourns.
The report notes a strong Peters wave across Harvey County where Peters nearly swept the delegate slate at the June 22 primaries. Barbour County also went Peters’ way unanimously. The Peters boom for congressman-at-large appears to be widening in the southwest.

Bas eball game played June 22 at Emporia grounds between the Ned Stockings of Wichita and the Emporia nine drew a large crowd. A substantial amount of money changed hands on the result. The score after nine innings was 12 to 13 with Wichita leading. The Emporias plan to travel to Wichita next week for the rematch.
Reports from the northwest continue favorable for a fine wheat crop. From portions of love and Nebraska corn is reported to be in a most encouraging condition, but in some sections of those states and elsewhere in the Northwest the growth is backward and the outlook less promising. C. E. Perkins, presi dent of the Chicago & Quinsy railroad, sees nothing encouraging in the crop prospects in Ilinois, although Nebras ka and Kansas promise wall.
The London steamer Astrobal of 1149 tons, loaded with deals from St John New Brunswick, struck an iceberg and sank off Point Lanes this morning. The crew were saved intact.
Miss Chevallier of Boston leading the National Society for the Protection of the Insane and Dr George M Beard with other officials met with the president by special appointment to seek a reprieve for Guiteau and a scientific commission to determine his sanity. The petition, signed by medical experts, argues Guiteau is insane and cites the lack of a fair trial.
The ongoing freight handlers strike shows little change with about ninety workers at New Jersey Central depot and North River piers, while merchants press railroads for higher wages. Elsewhere reports note weighers seeking raises, Hudson River trackmen seeking more pay, and a minor incident as a barge is unloaded under police supervision.

The Hope will head to Hammerfest with officers and crew provisions, while France and Turkey items discuss pork import bills and ambassadorial actions. Land League activity in New York mentions Davitt touring Chicago for a conference on future American League actions.
Fire at a Chicago Milwaukee St Paul erecting shop in Mucwarxer Wisconsin killed none but caused losses up to 25000 with walls remaining. In Danville Illinois Allie Mills aged 14 May Oglie 17 and Mary Jones 11 died by arsenic in a suspected suicide linked to family issues. Levi Frazier 35 drowned in a river near Topeka packing plant plans. Congress renominated Eman uel Schultz on first ballot at Dayton Ohio. Racecourse crowd 6000 enjoyed fine weather and sport in Micva between six and seven thousand spectators.
Major George W. Steele was renominated by acclamation for re-election to Congress at the Republican convention in Marion Indiana. The June 22 event named Steele as the party’s candidate for the eleventh district.
