Heavy clashes erupt in the Central Highlands as South Vietnamese forces face a major test. Reports say 60 North Vietnamese and 31 South Vietnamese government troops died in four battles near Ben Het and Dak To with no American casualties. casualties also include 25 North Vietnamese and 2 Americans at a base southwest of Khe Sanh.
Dr. Leland E. Call, 88, Manhattan, died Friday in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was former dean of the Kansas State University College of Agriculture and served on the faculty from 1907 to 1946.

In Union Square New York a bare chested man Eulas Allen 28 paced a 10 story warehouse parapet for two hours in 90 degree heat. Police Navy chaplain rabbi and others tried to coax him down. A bystander offered beer and he was finally pulled to safety and hospitalized. He cited despondency and lack of freedom blaming his wife. He refused a weapon offered by police.
Kansas prisons chief McAtee alleges Gov Docking shortchanged the system by denying requests for upgrades as 400 inmates caused $250000 in damage at Lansing. Col Woodson named to replace McAfee effective July 1 amid hospital arson attempt and unrest.
Twenty four district teen drivers from across Kansas compete in Lawrence for state safe driving titles sponsored by the Jaycees. The contest features a written test, street and highway driving, and a skills course with driving to start at 1 30 p m on Zone O at 19th and Naismith.
McArthur Tickett 24 of 1105 Ky St treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after an apparent fall near the 700 block of Massachusetts and New Hampshire Streets. A passing motorist reported two men walking, one injured, in the alley. Tickett was found in the 800 block of Rhode Island Street. Tickett’s companion said he found him in Edith's Tavern area. Police also handled a runaways and a vandalism report involving five boys pilfering cars in the 2000 block of Kentucky Street, with a Missouri license plate blue station wagon. Five 16-year-olds from St Louis were detained. four were released with juvenile officer authorization.
Two people were treated for injuries after Friday automobile accidents investigated by the Douglas County sheriff's department. Harold D. Deshazer 25 of Baldwin suffered chin and knee cuts after his car vaulted 58 feet and struck a culvert near Vinland. Car rie Easley 73 of Olathe remained for observation after her car rear ended a gasoline transport truck five miles west of Lawrence on U.S. 40. Damage totaled about $2,100.

A wartime resistance leader, he has Gaullist sympathy but not Gaullist absolutism, helped De Gaulle return to power in 1958, opposed Reynaud for the presidency, and has not been close to policy circles.
