Noted Baritone Found in Rome Amid War Ruins
George Tucker profiles Giuseppe De Luca and Amel Gigli living in Rome during World War II. De Luca, ex Metropolitan Opera baritone, hides in a bomb-marked mansion with a wirehaired terrier while awaiting a U.S. war’s end. Gigli, Metropolitan tenor, has not sung in the U.S. since 1939. De Luca recalls a 1940 Metropolitan cable urging his return, but he fears air travel and bombs. Both express intent to resume singing in America after peace.

Whisky will be made for a month under wartime liquor plan
Washington reports the war production board will release alcohol for whisky production from 40 million to 50 million gallons of 86 90 proof blended whisky for August. Senators applaud the move but urge stricter controls to curb distribution to offset bootleggers and the black market. Representative Bryan calls the plan shocking amid wartime food needs. Kenneth Baxter says only black marketeers benefit from the shortage.
