Allied forces near Cherbourg drive inland from Fort du Roule and Fort Octeville as bombardment and air support pound Nazi defenses. Troops advance from three directions toward the port while heavy fighting rages in suburbs and near key fortifications.
Allied reports say Eighth Army cleared Perugia after heavy fighting with remaining Nazi defenders and advanced to high ground north of the city. Fifth Army forgave minimal gains after heavy resistance in several villages as divisions from the Luftwaffe and SS fled from the region.
London reports more than 1000 American bombers and escorts attacked Berlin and outskirts in a possible first shuttle raid to new bases in Russia. Liberators and Fortresses faced heavy flak with few German fighters seen. Berlin claimed heavy raids on Hanover and Brunswick and warned of retaliation. Night attacks continued with RAF Mosquitos hammering rail yards at Caen and Chartres as allied forces press the Normandy and Russian front offensives.
Washington reports the Fifth War Loan has passed 16 percent of its goal. Through Monday, the seventh day of the campaign, individual purchases totaled 964 million dollars toward a 6 billion quota, with the total goal set at 16 billion for all buyers. Only individual purchases will be credited this week as the drive continues.

Washington June 21 The House Foreign Affairs Committee urged Hungary to halt mistreatment of Jews and warned perpetrators will be punished. Chairman Bloom and Representative Celler criticized U S ambassador Hayes for not cooperating with the War Refugee Board and suggested Spain could host refugees if needed.
London reports victorious Russian troops who occupied Viipuri yesterday pressed toward Helsinki. Finnish radio urged evacuations as Moscow boasted of crossing the Mannerheim line and overrunning Viipuri. Germans weighed ports moves along the Gulf of Bothnia while Finnish and Swedish sources warned of likely Finland defeat and shifting fronts.
Vice President Henry A. Wallace, in thanking the U S S R for hospitality, told Moscow radio before leaving for Chungking that his personal impressions surpassed expectations. He praised the Soviet peoples for heroic effort and hailed brilliant successes in science, industry and art.

In Washington on June 21 four Selenite men faced a massion conspiracy trial with defense arguments aimed at admitting about 200 exhibits. The bulk of exhibits consisted of German American Bund newspapers, bundles commands, and minutes of Bund conventions. The defendants were listed as voluntarily absent, allowing the trial to proceed. Gerald B. Winrod received permission to return to Wichita where his father was reported to be critically ill.
A Douglas County Fifth War Loan bond rally at Haskell Stadium drew 5000 participants boosting the county quota of 2213000. Auction proceeds topped 209600 in prizes with pledges totaling 220253 in war bond purchases. Highlights included bazooka firing, aircraft flyovers, and auctioneers from Missouri and local bidders.
