Gooch Pays Penalty First Kidnaping Execution in Lindbergh Era
McAlester Oklahoma. Jamesy Arthur Gooch 27 was hanged at the state prison for abducting two Paris Texas officers R N Baker and H R Marks. The trap was sprung at 506 am by Rich Owen who has electrocuted 63 men but never witnessed a hanging before. Gooch died fifteen minutes later in a case carried through all appeals to the U S Supreme Court. A crowd of more than 350 witnessed the execution including eight women. Gooch told his six year old son Billy Joe not to get into trouble as the boy pleaded for his father. President Roosevelt refused to intercede. The case invoked the federal Lindbergh law.
