Hays to Step Down as House Administration Chair

Rep Wayne Hays says he will relinquish his post as chair of the House Administration Committee citing health and allegations against him. He is hospitalized in Barnesville Ohio after a sleeping pill overdose and denies resigning from Congress while planning a possible return.

Lawrence health dept to provide contraception to all ages

Lawrence Douglas County Health Department will offer birth control and regular family planning services to persons of all ages including minors without parental consent. KDHE clarified local clinics are not state run, allowing policy shifts. federal funds will flow directly to local departments with age non restrictions.

Barn Fire Destroys Baldwin Dairy Structure Leased by Wasson Family

A Baldwin dairy barn leased by the Warren Wasson family burned to the ground Thursday night after a lightning strike. Milking equipment and about 500 bales of hay were destroyed. The barn stood nine miles south of Lawrence on County Road 1055 and was reported to have caught fire before 11:45 p.m. Neighbors alerted the Wassons as they slept, and they saved five baby calves. Wasson plans to move 24 cows to land owned by neighbor Goldie Foster temporarily.

SIPRI warns of world drift toward another war by 1980

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute projects about 29 or 30 countries could produce nuclear weapons by 1980, up from 19, and notes rising global arms spending surpassing 6 trillion dollars since World War II. It highlights shifts toward the Third World, with the Middle East receiving over half of 1975 arms shipments and regional militarization accelerating.

Ford urges Senate ratification of wheat trade pacts

President Ford asks the Senate to ratify quickly two agreements extending the Wheat Trade Convention of 1971 to June 30, 1978 and continuing the International Wheat Council. The Food Aid Convention would also be extended to provide minimum annual food aid to developing nations.

New Assistant Police Chief Stephens Seeks Change in Lawrence

Kansas Cities See Sharp Rise in Serious Crime in 1976 Q1
