Carter leads Democrats as debt grows ahead of convention

Jimmy Carter, holding a large delegate lead, faces about 1.75 million in campaign debt. A strategy session at SEA ISLAND GA with top aides outlined 12 fundraisers to raise about 1 million to reach a surplus by the Democratic National Convention next month. Lipshutz said the oweing debt now totals 1.75 million.

Freeze spurs aid applications for disaster relief

About 80 Douglas County farmers hit by a May 3 frost have sought federal emergency help with several hundred more expected. Eben Farley of the county ASCS notes a sharp rise in disaster claims as wheat harvest nears. Wheat arrivals at area elevators are light but growing, with quality described as fair to good. most aid requests come from farmers who ripped fields early to begin other crops.
