New Setup Could Help Prevent Sub Loss
The Navy awarded a 4.2 million contract to Lockheed Propulsion Co. of Redlands to develop solid propellant rocket engines for submarine ballast tanks. The system aims to expel water rapidly in deep-sea emergencies, potentially saving vessels like the ill fated Thresher which sank off New England on April 10, 1963 with 129 aboard.
