New York June 18 Fritz Kuhn former national leader of the German-American Bund was paroled from Clinton prison Dan nemora New York by the state parole board for internment by the federal government for the duration of the war. Kuhn 47 was convicted in 1939 of grand larceny of bond funds and forgery and sentenced to two and a half to five years. The parole decision was unanimous after two prior denials. Kuhn will be held at the prison until federal agents take him into custody.
Kansas City dispatch reports river levels receding and rail service returning to the west. Union Pacific to run a train via Lawrence and Topeka for the first time in 24 hours, with Pacific Coast Limited to attempt later today. Santa Fe reroutes over Frisco tracks to Olathe Ottawa and Emporia, while Emporia Topeka shuttle runs. Rock Island uses Missouri Pacific right of way to Herington and beyond. Missouri Pacific remains in operation to Omaha.
About 11 p m last night some 60 sailors from the Naval Training School at KU helped stop a Kaw river dike breach at Locust street near the river bridge. They pressed against the flood piling sandbags and calling shipmates to assist, holding the breach until repairs could secure the dike. Deputy Sheriff Ed Harris witnessed water five feet deep pouring through the initial break and praised the sailors for their courage.
