Baxter bugler ends 28 years of reveille routine
Baxter Tennessee resident Charlie Hughes has taken a two week vacation from his daily 5.4 am bugle reveille after 28 years. He began in 1924, believing bugle blowing promoted health and exercise, and has stood atop a pole in his backyard to sound the wakeup call each morning.

Build Up in Air Power Called for by Senate Panel
A Senate subcommittee urged rapid buildup of U S air power led by Lyndon Johnson and backed by Joint Chiefs of Staff testimony to reach 143 wings, with 126 combat and 17 support wings by 1934 end or 1934 mid, warning that delay risks defense and safety against a stronger Russian air threat. The report criticizes President Truman’s stretch-out and notes 1954 goals would be delayed to 1956, jeopardizing NATO and U S security.
