Authorities report a pursuit across the border as bandit activity intensifies near San Benito. Troops push into disputed terrain to intercept, while local residents brace for possible clashes and seek safety.
Reports from San Antonio and Brownsville describe American cavalry actions near San Benito and Brownsville amid Mexican bandit activity. General Pershing warns Trevino not to move troops away from the border, while Washington stresses no change in policy and readiness to mobilize if needed.
Despondent Carty tried to kill himself with a throat slash while with companions on a river trip. He collapsed, but doctors say the juggular vein escaped and he is expected to recover at Social Service hospital under care of Dr. H. T. Jones. Sheriff's team and friends aided his removal to county camp nearby.
At Lecompton the courthouse proceedings move forward on a petition to alter a northern road. The hearing is ongoing with no midday action reported, while county officials review the plan and related elements for possible inclusion.
June 17 dispatches report Austro-Hungarian forces defeating a Russian cavalry near the Dniester while German troops attack French positions near Avoncourt and Hill 425. A German ace Beelke is believed killed after a Verdun engagement. The British destroyer Biden sank after a collision in the English Channel. Eden's crew saved, others missing. Chemical engineering students from the AE department report strong demand for their skills this summer. Several graduates have secured roles as chemists and researchers, with assignments at Du Pont, Fire Gas, United States and Tron companies.
The Merchants Association headquarters are being remodeled by carpenters and plasterers and should finish by mid next week. New partitions are being built this morning and the banquet room will look like a finished hall after the joining of small ell walls. Timers are busy installing the large skylight above the banquet room.

Merle C Prunty U graduate in 1909 has been chosen as principal of Kansas City Kane junior high. He will lead a staff of about thirty teachers and oversee a five year curriculum for grades seven to ten including science mathematics languages serial sciences physical training and vocational work. Prunty is in Topeka attending state board exams and will do graduate work in Chicago this summer.
City officials and Lawrence businessmen convened at City Hall to explore consolidating service with the Home Telephone Company. They discuss creating a solid plant and equitable rate schedule for business and property owners and may invite Home Telephone officials to present a tentative proposal.
Free moving picture entertainments at the university chapel draw growing crowds. Films belong to the University and may be offered next year to Kansas High Schools. Charges include rental and possible fifty cent per reel fee if high schools present. Eighteen Kansas towns listed for next year include Parsons Coffeyville Galena Fort Scott and more.
The Werristts came overland to Lass and will return home next week to Garden City. Herriett and Mrs. Alrich accompanied them to Lawrence and Mobile, with further travel to follow in June.
Prof. F. T. Owen of Emporia will fill an allotment tomorrow at the Presbyterian Church. Rey Chas, Tier of Charleston, NL, formerly a preacher there, has been confined at home due to a funeral. Owen will present talks titled “The Growth of a Man” and “The Living Christ.”
Lawrence voters face a second vote on Thursday to purchase and improve the water plant. A complete advisory and official commission will oversee plans, with an unpaid citizen advisory group to ensure economical, thorough development. Notable leaders include Bromelsiek, Otto Gut Ide, Poehler & Co., Walling, LeColloch, Weingartner, and Baumbgartner. Black & Venteh to lead plant construction oversight.
County Commissioner Gus Brane son, Young Wan Brane, was injured when a wagon struck by a Santa Fe train on the Santa Fe tracks caused only minor injuries. He remained confined briefly but woke and sat up after two days, suffering a bruised ankle with no broken bones. doctors reported progress toward recovery.

In Philadelphia volunteers to operate trains if a strike hits the Pennsylvania Railroad. Thelma Irene Owens, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs John Owens, dies of bronchitis after whooping cough at their Massachusetts street home. Marriage licenses issued to Harry Sheward and Amy McCanley of Leavenworth and to ID. Ht Wenrich of Lawrence and Myra Spangler of Lecompton.
A. G. Alrich will be the sole Kansas representative at the fifth annual convention of the International Stamp Manufacturers Association. The event runs June 21 and 22 at the Hotel La Salle in Chicago. Alrich leaves for Chicago tonight and will return Friday.
The dental office of L H Frink upstairs in the People's State bar building was robbed last night while Dr Frink was away. The thief opened the safe and took between 350 and 60 in dental gold and other supplies, leaving no clues. The safe was found open and the workroom door unlocked when Frink returned from lunch, suggesting use of a skeleton key. An order of 16 of dental gold delivered earlier yesterday was among the stolen items.
A large summer program at Haskell Indian School starts Monday with 500 or more instructors from Indian Jols nationwide attending. Ponirs of Interstate Indian schools leads, with Doug las county replacing its usual institute. Daily schedules cover registration, band concerts, sessions on penmanship, library management, drafting, farm carpentry, reading, and domestic science, plus group games and community music.
Alexander Howat, president of the Kansas district of the United Mine Workers, is awarded 7000 in damages against Joseph Hazen of Mulberry Kansas after a jury verdict. The jury found against Charles S Keith and the Central Coal and Coke Co. on a separate slander claim. Hazen did not appear. his deposition was read. The trial spanned two days of deliberation after four weeks of court action.
The Brooklyn Eagle reports the engagement of Mrs. John J. Astor widow of Col. J. J. Astor who died on the Titanic to William Thick of Brooklyn. The wedding is planned for Bar Harbor Maine on June 19. Thick is a sugar refiner. The match involves Mrs Astor’s $5,000,000 trust from Col. Astor’s will.
A dozen Kansas National Guard officers from Lawrence will travel to Fort Leavenworth for a week long instruction camp starting tomorrow. Col. W S Metcalf will return from Oberlin and join the officers to Leavenworth. The encampment at the Guard is set to begin August 21.
At Topeka a meeting of the state welfare commission resulted in Rev E E Stauffer being named a member of the new state mercantile board. The panel will oversee wartime conditions and sanitation of stores across Kansas. Lawrence commissioners discussed appointing Johnston of 1112 a s to be milk inspector of the city. Johnston has dairy industry experience and consulted Mr. Deem of the state board of health about enforcing the milk inspection ordinance. Fundraising to pay the inspector's salary is cited as the main current hurdle.
Tax collections at the county treasurer's office reached 3000 dollars yesterday, the largest amount collected during the first five days of the week. The figure reflects steady revenue as residents fulfilled tax obligations.
