Wreckage of Capital Airlines DC-4 Found on Blue Ridge
A Capital Airlines four engine DC-4 passenger plane missing since last night was found on a mountain spur north west of Leesburg Virginia. All aboard believed dead. only a 10 month old infant survived unharmed. Pilot Captain Horace Stark and crew Robert Creekmore and Margaret Wall were among the victims. Passengers included Dr Courtney Smith medical director of the American Red Cross and David P Goodwin fire control chief for the U.S. Forest Service. Rescue efforts began at dawn with ground parties sweeping the Virginia West area while the wreckage was located by Jane Franklin a maintenance director who followed the plane’s normal Chicago to Washington route. The crash occurred after the plane departed Chicago at 1:45 p.m. EST yesterday with stops in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The plane reportedly disintegrated on impact and the wreck lies on the mountain near the Shenandoah valley.
