More Regulation for Telephones in Washington
The Federal Communications Commission asked Congress for broader power over the $6 billion telephone industry while trimming some recommendations. The agency urged basic cost accounting for Western Electric, oversight of securities, mandatory filings for consolidations, and FCC approval for stock acquisitions, plus licensing Bell patents to others. The report notes Bell system subsidies and possible improper influence but asserts substantial user savings from the inquiry.
