Perjury claim questioned in Thomas district race
Brook Macdonald states she has no lease with Thomas and that Jacob Swisher rents the East 152nd Street property. Swisher is listed as a campaign contributor to Thomas in 2017. Thomas says the family is temporarily at the address while awaiting a new home closing in the 26th District. The case involves a Kansas election perjury statute and is the second such challenge this season in Kansas. Statehouse reporter Peter Hancock can be reached at 354-4222. Kansas officials clash on education funding and immigration
In April the Kansas Coalition for Fair Funding proposed a constitutional amendment to strip state courts of education funding decisions. Lawmakers passed a five year 548 million funding increase signed by Gov. Colyer, now under review by the Kansas Supreme Court for adequacy. Colyer touted higher pay for teachers and better instruction while not endorsing a specific funding amendment. Kobach supported the amendment. Orman backed a practical immigration policy and Laura Kelly urged a path for immigrant labor. Kobach warned illegal immigrants harm American workers and opposed in state tuition.
