Lawrence area faces higher levies after assessors raise city real estate values from nine to twelve million while county valuations fall. About 2000 property cards go out as the board of equalization adjusts valuations, with hearings on complaints set for Thursday through Saturday.
The spurty treasurer’s office remained crowded with taxpayers paying the second half of personal property taxes. Daily totals rose from 3988.09 on June 7 to 14083.27 by yesterday, with the largest single payment 1225.75 and the smallest 3.29. The day of highest turnout was Saturday with many farmers visiting town.
Charles Wilson of Rhode Island Street reports to the sheriff that a 2 bay pony with a white facial stripe and two white left feet, weighing about 850 pounds, may have strayed or been stolen. A halter with about fifteen feet of rope is missing with the horse. Miss Gussie Gaskill, daughter of Mr and Mrs Terry Gaskill, has passed the examinations for the Doctor of Philosophy at Cornell University where she has taught for two years. She will return to Cornell this fall as a member of the faculty. She earned bachelor and master degrees at K U and will arrive home in about a week for vacation.
I W W organizers were tried for vagrancy after being pulled from a box near Cherryvale where they rode to harvest fields in Sedgwick County. The jury included three American Legion members with one commander present.
The Lawrence street railway will upgrade to ten new cars and existing stock to handle daily and event traffic. Three repair cars support operations including rock and cement mixing and brick hauling. Welding joints in rails will total over six hundred welds to form solid rails.
Chancellor H. H. Lindley returned from Bloomington where he gave the commencement address. He received the doctor of laws degree along with President Coffman and others. A million dollar Memorial campaign was launched for a stadium, union building, and a women's dormitory, with about 600000 raised so far. Lindley will speak at the University of Arkansas during its five day semi centennial celebration.
A joint conference of Kansas Child Welfare Committee and Children’s Code Committee of the State Federation of Women’s Clubs will be held in Topeka on June 2 to review the legislative program for the next session. Henrietta Mayfield, executive secretary of the commission, announced today.

John North of Tuney waxie announces the recovery of his hogs stolen from a pasture near De Soto. Robert Scott, jailed at Leavenworth, is charged with theft. A half mile lead, a chase through countryside, and a hastily built hog pen culminate in the hogs being returned to the North family by Sunday night.
The Journal-World with over 5000 subscribers announces an unusual advertising service for the summer business. It invites merchants to inform the community what they have to sell this June.
Topeka, June 18. The State Tax Commission plans a series of public hearings across Kansas from July 1 to July 12 to allow county officials and citizens to file complaints and petitions on the 1922 valuations. The hearings cover many counties organized by date and location.
