Navy review confirms Lexington sank after five hour battle with fires and explosion. About 92 percent of the crew were rescued from the 2300 aboard, with Japanese losses including one carrier and several capital ships.
Allied capitals speculated on three major developments aimed at defeating Germany and Japan and shaping postwar peace. Reports noted a possible second front in Europe in 1942, Russian attacks on Japan, and Soviet air bases for US bombers.
Nazi field dispatches report a fresh assault east of Kharkov amid hints of a major summer offensive. Soviet replies say German gains are mounting as Sevastopol defenders counter attack. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's forces suffered a setback with Chuhsien falling, a western Chekiang rail hub, as Japanese troops pushed into Kiangsi on a 30 mile front. Chinese recaptured Iwu on the Chekiang Kiangsi railway midway between Chuhsien and Hangchow. Tokyo reports say Japanese forces moved from western Chekiang into Kiangsi after seizing Changshan and Kiangshan.
A Kansas windstorm near Hutchinson killed Mrs. Helen Gibson, 58, and injured her daughter Patty Gibson, 19, as barns collapsed and property damage spread across the region. The storm, not a tornado, toppled trees and damaged houses and businesses in Hutchinson and nearby towns, with rainfall totals up to 1.87 inches in some areas and widespread power-line outages reported in Kansas City.
Topeka June 12 The Wichita Kansas senator Reed said no final decision on running for governor. Campaign manager Thompson claimed Reed would seek the Republican nomination and resign his senate seat if nominated. Reed would file by June 20 and outline a labor related platform.
Severe early June storms hit Hesston Zimmerdale and Walton with several small tornadoes and hail causing heavy damage to barns and a college gymnasium with about 1500 acres of small grains wiped out. No fatalities or serious injuries reported in Newton area.

London reports the German controlled Prague radio announced 18 additional Czech executions, part of a total of 358 reprisals since the Heydrich attack. It said 350 men from Lidice were shot, with executions in Prague and Bruenn including two women.
Two men held up the Railway Express office in the Frisco building in Joplin Missouri shortly before noon and escaped with 2500 dollars in one dollar bills just delivered for shipment to a Kansas City bank.
The notice states sugar stamp No 3 in War Rationing book No 1 expires Saturday at midnight and may not be used after that time. Stamp No 4 must be used on Sunday June 14 and will be valid for the next two weeks.

Washington reports Maj. Gen. Clarence L. Tinker commander of the Hawaii based Army Air Forces is missing after leading a bomber flight against the Japanese fleet at Midway. His last seen descent was toward the sea. search efforts found no trace. Tinker, an Osage, was the first American air general reported missing in WWII.
Washington reports chair man Doughton said the house ways and means committee rejected a treasury plan for a 15 percent manufacturers tax on candy but warned the issue could be reopened. The panel also discussed a possible one cent soft drink levy and other excise tax adjustments as it nears final revenue totals.
Governor Ratner said Kansas aims to preserve voting rights for Kansans in the armed forces. He directed Harold Harding of the Topeka OGR to confer with Attorney General Jay S. Parker on the legal process for military voting noting soldiers endure danger to defend freedoms including the ballot.

Washington reports a senate house conference agreeing to allow family relationships as a basis for deferments from military service. The compromise aligns parts of the funding for wives children and other dependents with minimal disruption to the selective service act. Retroactive to June 1 payments likely start around November due to administrative needs alongside a separate service pay bill raising minimum pay to 50 dollars monthly and increasing pay up the rank of second lieutenant.
Six thousand to seven thousand miners in Oklahoma and Arkansas coal fields will give up their two week vacations for a $200 token payment and an extra day off around the July 4 holiday. The agreement was reached at a meeting of CIO officials and mine operators to aid the war production program.

The Mid Western Music Camp presents a 4 p.m. orchestra concert in Hoch auditorium directed by David T Lawson and an 8 p.m. band concert in the open air theater conducted by Russell L Wiley. The program includes modern and classical pieces with a focus on winds, strings and percussion and features a church service and music appreciation classes for students.
One thousand canning sugar certificates were received at the local rationing office this morning. Certificates will be issued for canning sugar at the Lawrence National bank building office until noon tomorrow. The local office closes at noon on Saturday. The state office had not received certificates from Washington but located 1 000 extras in Johnson county.
Senator Clyde Reed reports the Office of Price Administration will hold a public hearing in Parsons Kansas on June 19 to decide if small defense rental areas should be treated differently from larger ones. Reed objects to stabilizing or reducing Parsons rents to the July 1 1941 level noting no prior impact from new workers.
