Washington June 11 UP The house ways and means committee voted to raise the federal tax on cigarettes from 6 1/4 cents to 7 cents per pack to generate about 65 million dollars. Chairman Doughton said they tentatively favored a 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 per thousand rise and rejected a brand differential. They planned to act on cigars and tobacco taxes to raise roughly 40 million more, while treasury proposals to set 3 1/2 dollars per thousand for 10 cent brands and 4 dollars per thousand for 15 cent brands could yield about 188 million dollars.

Draftees After June 15 Will Receive a Furlough
Draftees leaving Douglas county after June 15 will get automatic fourteen day furloughs after induction. Accepted at the induction center they will be released from active duty for two weeks and transferred to the enlisted reserve corps. The army provides transportation meals and lodging en route to their homes and back to the reception center, traveling in groups under an acting corporal. The furlough is voluntary. a man may go directly from the induction center to the reception center if he wishes.
