Vernon Cooper said it is too early to judge the elm disease inoculation program in Lawrence this spring. Four thousand eight hundred fifty two public trees received Bidrin injections. seven of eight tested trees showed disease, mostly among treated trees, while 18 private trees were diseased without injections. Lawrence mayor Jim Owens spoke at KU Girls State dinner noting the surreal moment of being surrounded by about 400 young women. Enrollment for Lawrence public schools summer programs reached 1,240 with multiple courses and driver education sessions planned through July. Tonga High to Have First Exchange Student on Rolls
The new Tonganoxie High School will enroll its first exchange student, Tobias Orr of Peak Hill Australia, arriving in August to live with the Don Heubner family. Orr, 16, will be a senior, sponsored by the American Field Service, with support from the community and school groups. He plans to study agricultural work at a research station after returning to Australia. The campus moves to completion next week with July 1 relocation of equipment from the old to the new building.

Med Center Receives Special TV Grant for Education Link
The National Fund for Medical Education awarded the Kansas University Medical Center a 25000 grant for a two way closed circuit television hookup linking KU Medical Center and KU campus. A repeater near Bonner Springs and a 210 foot tower are planned with operations hoped for fall.
