Survey shows 218 priests removed in 2002 abuse purge
The Washington Post reports 218 priests were removed in 2002 for child sexual abuse allegations, with at least 34 known offenders still in church positions. The survey of 178 dioceses found 850 priests accused since the 1940s and more than 350 removed previously, amid ongoing lawsuits and financial settlements.
