The Soviet Union launched Luna 6 toward the moon in what appears to be a second attempt in a month to achieve a soft lunar landing. Tass reports the automatic station will operate about three and a half days on a multistage rocket journey, following Luna 5.
Kansas University marks its 1965 commencement with Wescoe praising the class as lucky and noting that there are no simple questions. Gov. Avery and Regent A. H. Cromb urge support for higher education as distinguished graduates receive citations. Distinguished Service Citations go to Henry Bubb Mahion Delp Warren Mason and Ralph L. Smith as the chancellor welcomes graduates at the Union reception and commencement.
Lawrence 21 year old Loran A Mendell of 1219 Prairie treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a one car crash on East 15th Street 1.4 miles east of Lawrence around 7 10 p m Monday. Deputy John Miller said Mendell suffered spinal facial head and knee injuries when his 1954 vehicle veered off the road and struck a telephone pole. He does not recall the crash or hitting the pole. The car was a total loss.
An intense manhunt spread from Salina Kansas for Duane Pope a 22 year old college educated farmer suspected of robbing a Nebraska bank and killing its president and two employees. A bank employee was wounded in the Big Springs Nebraska holdup last Friday. The FBI stated Pope had ties to the 1500 dollar robbery via a rental car and possible travel toward Texas. A Fort Worth connection and missing 1939 Buick are noted as investigators seek clues.
About 1,500 attended a Kansas Union reception as KU alumni and officials gathered. Arthur Cromb marked a new grandfather moment while Dr. Donald Brada and Mrs. Brada welcomed a son during the commencement events.
