Germans flee to freedom on river boat hijack in Berlin

A group of 13 East Germans hijacked the 386 ton Friedrich Wolf excursion boat on the Spree, escaping to West Berlin under heavy gunfire. Police fired 200 bullets. no one was hurt. The seven adults plus five women and a five month old boy reached Western territory as the boat was later allowed to resume to East Berlin.

Ex-Convict Sought After Alley Slaying In Kansas City

A former deputy sheriff George C. Wilber II was shot dead by ex convict Foy Lee Engberg during a pursuit in Kansas City. Engberg, Lanphere and Mrs. Martin were connected to a spate of holdups with weapons found in a getaway car. Willsey reported Engberg fired after a traffic stop and chase ensued.

Miss Sunflower the 500 pound yearling buffalo stole the scene in a Woodland Park Zoo corral as Kansas Gov. John Anderson and Washington Gov. Albert Rosellini watched.
