Kansas City Public Schools board approved an 14 month retroactive contract for Supt Bernard Taylor Jr through June 30 2002 after Benjamin Demps Jr. quit. The measure passed 8-1 with Patricia Kurtz voting no citing concerns about the selection process. Taylor’s pay is set between 145000 and 150000.
A victim or victims have reached a financial settlement with the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, with limits on disclosed terms. Former priest Robert K. Larson pleaded guilty in February to four counts of sex crimes involving former altar boys at St Marys Church in Newton between 1984 and 1986 and received a prison sentence of three to 10 years. Larson, now 71, is confined at Norton Correctional Facility. An autopsy for Valley Center man Jose D. Andrade, 25, shows a blood alcohol content of 0.16, twice the legal limit, after a May 5 single vehicle crash that killed Andrade and his two sons aged 4 and 6. Police said the Chevrolet Blazer hit a tree and none of the victims wore seat belts.
In Independence, Kansas, residents urge keeping Montgomery County in the 4th District amid the state’s four district redraw. They argue urban-rural shifts favor maintaining regional links to Wichita, Pittsburg, Chanute, and Fort Scott, despite calls to place the county in the 2nd District with southeast Kansas.
